And the Sea

AND THE SEA

SINGLE CHANNEL VIDEO, 5 Min 15 Sec

And The Sea is a contemporary use of water as a catalyst for the sublime. The turbulent ocean and it's environment are filmed using a “trombone shot” to illicit psychological distress. These images are transformed into an undulating, kaleidoscopic collage of a coastal landscape, echoing the setting Caspar David Friedrich places his diminutive figure against in the painting “The Monk and the Sea”. The viewer is surrounded by a pulsing, slowly unfolding earth, and the mirrored images create a confusion of perspective and scale. The viewer is viscerally disconnected from a stability of place. The soundtrack of breath and waves, and the animalistic character of the movement, gives the landscape a living quality. The video aims to compel the viewer to consider their own bodily rhythm of breathing in relation to a living and ever-changing earth, and alludes to another universe coexisting with our human one.
